Italian eatery Mappamondo has found its way back home. For most of the 90’s, Mappamondo was a West Village gem locals would visit for authentic Italian fare at a reasonable price. After shutting down and leaving Manhattan in 1999 to pursue other ventures, restaurant owner Claudio Gottard has decided to re-open the once acclaimed restaurant in its old location at 11 Abingdon Square. “I love the West Village and have had opportunities to open elsewhere, but I never wanted to, said Gottard, a native of the Lake Como area of Italy. “And what are the chances that you can open [Mappamondo] in the same location with the same name?”
Jason Turner and Anna Rhein, of Zelnik and Company, completed the lease on behalf of the Tenant and the Landlord. Gottard signed a ten year lease for 1,650 square feet. The asking rent for the space was $9,000 per month. The restaurant will be open for business later this month.
